Privacy Policy for What I Spend?
Last updated: 7 August 2026
The short version
We do not collect your data. There is no account, and no server of ours holds anything you type into this app.
Everything you record, meaning your expenses, your categories and your settings, is stored on your own phone and nowhere else. We cannot see it, because it is never sent to us.
What the app stores, and where
On your phone, in the app's own private storage:
- The expenses you enter: the amount, the date, the category, and any note.
- Your categories, including any you rename, add, or hide.
- Your settings: your name if you choose to give one, your currency, and your text size.
iOS keeps this storage private to the app. No other app can read it.
If you have iCloud Backup switched on for your phone, Apple's own device backup may include this storage, in the same way it includes your other apps. That backup is between you and Apple; it is covered by Apple's privacy policy, and we have no access to it.
Nothing anywhere else.
There is no account to create, no sign-in, and no user list. We do not operate a server that stores your records, so there is nothing of yours for us to lose, hand over, or be asked for.
Files you save yourself
The app can save your records as a spreadsheet. When you do that, iOS asks you where it should go: Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Mail, or another app on your phone.
That file is yours. It goes only where you send it, and it does not pass through any service of ours. What happens to it afterwards is governed by whichever service you chose to put it in.
The same applies in reverse: when you add records from a spreadsheet, the app reads the file you pick and nothing else.
The one thing the app does contact
The app checks whether a newer version of its own code is available, using Expo's update service. That request says which version of the app you are running and which kind of device it is, and nothing else. None of your records are involved, and the check does not wait: the app always opens straight away from the copy already on the phone.
This is how a fix can reach you without waiting for a new App Store release.
What we never do
- We never ask for your bank details, card numbers, or online banking logins. The app has no connection to any bank.
- We do not show adverts.
- We do not use analytics, trackers, or advertising identifiers.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your information, because we do not have it.
- We do not build a profile of you, and there is nothing to build one from.
Your control over your records
- Change or remove anything. Records → tap any expense to edit or delete it.
- Keep your own copy. Settings → "Save your records to a file".
- Delete everything. Settings → "Start over". This removes every expense and category from the phone. Any spreadsheet you have already saved is yours and is not affected.
- Remove it all at once. Deleting the app removes its storage with it.
Because nothing is held by us, there is no request you need to send us to have your data erased. Deleting it on the phone is the whole of it.
Children
This app is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone, regardless of age.
Analysis and advice
The summaries in the app are worked out on your phone from the figures you typed in. Nothing is sent anywhere to produce them, and no artificial-intelligence service is involved.
What I Spend? describes what you recorded. It does not give financial or investment advice. For advice about your money, please speak to a qualified adviser you trust.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of the app stores anything outside your phone, for example an optional cloud backup, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the app will ask you before anything is sent.
